Being a man of the outdoors, you have a fair measure of the subject but maybe, just perhaps, there is something new going around.Aaah, no there isnt! Its the East Cape bushbuck in the limelight again. Most of the group are farmers and very proud of the bushbuck and its ability to deliver serious doses of payback to those who interfere with its life in the thickets.

Why bushbuck? Perhaps because every boy growing up on an East Cape farm drifts into the bush at a certain age and against the admonishments of his parents hunts the most dangerous creature out there. You may surmise that each farmer in the tavern is a boy who survived that clash and will easily be persuaded to relive the experience.A hawk drifts by, homebound, wing feathers arched and fluttering, hard black eyes always searching.

A last pulse of light from the hillside below where the suns shadows are slowly painting the world into night, turns his head and he sees the legend of the thickets, standing stiff legged and warning off another who would dare enter the field. The East Cape bushbuck is trouble. Aggressive, powerful, fast and truly deadly in defence, hes the master of the tunnels that network his thicket home.Challenge the hype, the stories and the legends that have been built around this pocket battleship?

Never, theyre all true. It really has killed and severely injured man and beast for as long as it has been challenged, particularly in those tunnels everyone talks about, and, to be sure this behaviour is going to continue and remain unchecked. For the most part, you face buffalo and elephant standing on your feet in fair light with a number of guns nearby. But crawling into the thorny half dark tunnels on your hands and knees, with a little dog barking somewhere ahead, poses difficulties.

Its probably only a minute or so before the dog yelps and comes tearing back down the tunnel with a bushbuck ram in hot pursuit. The dog cannot slow because youre in the way and must somehow get around you, or maybe under you, at the exact same moment the bushbuck, head down with those dagger-like spiral horns lowered, reaches you, or your face or even your chest, its all much the same really. At this point the floodgates open and everyone is terribly keen to take everyone else to that moment and share their particular solution, and its no surprise that in the general excitement the evidence gleaned from those who died in the tunnels, is also picked over for clues. So what about a bushbuck hunt?
