Revising his doctoral dissertation for Drew University, produced sometime after 1993, Anderson (Bible and theology, Asbury College, Kentucky) explores the relationship between the thought of Wesley, an 18th-century British evangelical who founded the Methodist movement, and the thought of Clement, a second-century Christian philosopher and catechetical school headmaster. After looking at every possible avenue by which Wesleys self-avowed dependence on Clement might be proven or disproven, at some of the complexities of Clements thought related to Christian experience, and at legitimate connections between Clements second-century Eastern soteriology and Wesleys 18th-century Methodism, he concludes that Wesley read and drew upon the thought of Clement in formulating his doctrine of Christian perfection and the experience of holiness in heart and life.
